Silvius Leopold Weiss

composer and lutenist German .

Born in Breslau (now Wroclaw ) October 12, 1686, Sylvius Leopold Weiss was descended from a family of lute. He received his education in the lute from his father Johann Jacob Weiss. He entered the 1708 the service of Count Carl Philip of the Palatinate , starting to compose music for the lute. Later he entered the service of the Polish Prince Alexander Sobieski , with whom he remained some years in Italy coming into contact with Alessandro and Domenico Scarlatti and other Italian composers of the time . In 1715 the death of Prince Sobieski, he returned to Germany in the service of Carl Philip of the Palatinate. In 1717 is a member of the chapel of the court of Saxony to Dresden , which in time became the leading musician with the highest salary. He met numerous times Johann Sebastian Bach in Dresden, where he died October 16, 1750.

As a virtuoso and composer Weiss is generally considered the greatest lutenist of the late Baroque . His work for the lute, composed of thousands of pieces, is the largest corpus music ever written for lute. Almost all of his compositions are grouped into suites composed of 6 in a sequence of the same hue normally allemande, courante, Bourrée, Sarabande, and Minuet giga (or happy). The main sources we have for knowledge of his work are on the London Manuscript kept at British Library of London , which includes 237 tablatures manuscript for lute alone, including 26 suites and other compositions such as Fantasia ( Prague, 1719), and Tombeau sur la mort du comte Johann Anton Logy . The Dresden Manuscript kept at the Sächsische Landesbibliothek in Dresden , includes 21 suites. His concertos for lute and other instruments are lost.
